Teen pleads guilty in Columbia murder

A Columbia teen pleaded guilty for his role in a deadly shooting last year.

Lamarr Mayfield, 16, was in court Monday where he entered a guilty plea on charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action. Mayfield was set to begin a jury trial Tuesday, but instead he accepted a plea bargain.

He was sentenced to 17 years in prison and has to serve at least 85 percent of that sentence.

Mayfield was accused of shooting and killing 17-year-old Bryan Rankin in April 2012.

The Rankin family told ABC 17 News that they don’t believe the sentence is long enough, but they are happy to finally get justice for their son and will now focus on trying to move on.
