Scammers targeting Cole County businesses

The Cole County Commissioners are asking local businesses to be on the lookout for a phone scam.

Commissioners say an out-of-state group has been targeting the county businesses through phone calls, saying they are selling refrigerator magnet advertisements on behalf of the county.

These scammers are said to be demanding and are asking for hundreds of dollars and credit card information.

Cole County Sheriff Greg White has this advice for anyone who has become a victim to these scammers: “If it turns out that you ended up giving them your credit card information, whether or not you received a document, check your bills and if there’s purchases that shouldn’t be there; you need to be making that law enforcement call.”

Officials say that the more people that report the scammers, the quicker they will be brought to justice.
