Scammer using Moore, Oklahoma tornado to get money

The Heart of Missouri American Red Cross Chapter is warning Mid-Missourians about a scammer trying to get donations from residents.

The Red Cross says the scammer has called several residents in the Columbia area, seeking donations for victims of the Moore, Okla. tornado.

The scammer is apparently using the Red Cross and Salvation Army as a way to get monetary donations.

“The first clue that the call is a scam would be if person calling claims to represent the Red Cross and the Salvation Army,” said Red Cross community market manager Clayton Kennedy in a statement. “The Red Cross and the Salvation Army have their own fund-raising programs and would not combine their efforts.

The organization says the Red Cross also never asks for donations over the phone or by going door-to-door.

“It’s just a fact that crooks will prey on well-intentioned people after a disaster, such as the situation in Oklahoma” Kennedy said. “I urge people to be cautious when they receive phone calls seeking donations to help tornado victims. If you think you received a bogus call or door-to-door solicitation for donations, call authorities.”
