Columbia mayor reelected, challengers unseat council incumbents

Voters in Columbia overwhelmingly reelected Mayor Bob McDavid in the April election.

McDavid won against challenger Sid Sullivan with 60 percent of the vote. 12,830 votes were cast in the race.

In the race for city council seats, challengers in both the 3rd and 4th Ward challengers defeated incumbents.

Karl Skala unseated Gary Kespohl for the 3rd Ward Council seat, winning 54 percent of the vote.

In the 4th Ward Council race, Ian Thomas defeated incumbent Daryl Dudley and Bill Weitkemper with just under 52 percent of the vote.

Columbia voters also overwhelmingly to apply restrictions to eminent domain. With 70 percent of the vote, residents passed a resolution that bans the city from using eminent domain to seize property that would be given to private companies.

Voters in Boone County passed Proposition 1, the 911 sales tax, with approximately 57 percent of the vote. The tax will help to fund a new 911 emergency operations center and additional staff.
