Postal workers fight to save Mid-Missouri processing center

Members of a local postal workers union are fighting to save a Mid-Missouri processing center near the Columbia airport.

Supporters met Friday afternoon to emphasize how important the facility is to the region. They say if a large part of the operation is moved, mail will be rerouted to other parts of the state and face delays as long as a week.

Union leaders say the center covers roughly 1,000-square miles, from Kirksville to Camdenton. That includes Jefferson City and dozens of colleges.

Representatives urge everyone to attend another meeting next week on the possible job losses.

The postal service says it is going broke. Agency officials think they can save more than $4 million dollars by moving the facility to Kansas City and St. Louis. They still claim nothing is decided.

The public forum is this Tuesday at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, starting at 6:30 p.m.
