Safety Crews Urge Snow Preps

With the possibility of a dangerous winter weather mix on Thursday, emergency crews are urging people to get ready. However, stores in our area report few people stopping by to prepare On Wednesday stores were full of supplies, but not as many people buying them. Steve Moreau who manages Westlake ACE Hardware in Columbia said they have not had many people picking up winter gear, something emergency crews said that needs to change. “People just need to be prepared, and being prepared is having supplies that they can live or function off of for at least three days,” said Gale Blomenkamp with the Boone County Fire Department.”Don’t wait until it happens, be prepared,” said Moreau. Firefighters said food, water and medical supplies are the most important assets to have inside a home during a storm. Also have blankets to keep warm, and flashlights with extra batteries. Firefighters said it’s also important to keep your cell phones charged in case the power goes out. They could be your only form of communication. If people must leave their homes they should stock up their car for any emergencies. “You want to have a small trunk shovel, maybe some sand, kitty litter, a small bag of Ice Melt,” said Moreau.”Probably the most important is extra clothing, dry clothing and blankets to stay warm … food and water after that,” said Blomenkamp.Finally if you don’t have to drive, stay off the roads.
