Drivers Have Problems with Roads
Many of the problems were on roads where there was any kind of a hill or an incline.ABC 17 News talked with a few drivers who left at the time and said conditions just got too bad too quickly.”It’s just gotten progressively worse,” Carol Lewis said as she looked at a semi-truck that stalled out in front of her store in Columbia.Lewis tells us the stretch of road in front of her store is usually not too bad. The problem on this stretch is there is a slight hill that many drivers could not overcome. Calls to fire and police were coming in several per minute, many with similar problems.”Most folks with front-wheel drive aren’t having too much trouble going up here,” Lewis says. “It’s a long steep hill and you’ve got to take it really slow.”Emergency vehicles were also having problems getting around. There were calls for accidents, fires and stuck cars they could not reach because they could not get through stalled traffic. The traffic was so bad in some places, there were even Mizzou students sitting and waiting to help move cars along.Lewis think most of the blame lies with drivers this time and not city crews. She says a lot of the vehicles having problems were the ones lowest to the ground and the ones with little to no tread on the tires.
