Halloween Safety Risks

Halloween is right around the corner, and while it’s the month to get scared, safety officials are warning of real dangers that come with the holiday.Just like Halloween, safety is all about the costume, adding a glow stick to a costume and maybe even a flash light goes a long way to preventing a dangerous situation. When buying costume fire officials told ABC 17 News to first check the tag to make sure it is fire resistant.”Know that some materials will either catch on fire or they will melt, and although you may not get a flame once they start melting that material can stick to the child’s skin,” said Gale Blomenkamp with the Boone County Fire Protection District. A costume should also fit and not block a child’s eyes. If a costume is too long it could cause the child to trip plus a mask could block their vision. Finally once your child can see, be sure you can see them.Jodie Thiemann has two young daughters and told ABC 17 News, “Well if their costumes are too dark it’s always possible that other cars on the road might not see them and it’s a risk of them getting hit by a car, so we usually have reflectors for their costumes.”Safety officials said following these costume rules before Halloween can save a life, however one of best ways to protect trick or treaters during the holiday, is for parents to accompany their kids.
