Leaders Work on New 911 Center

Several Boone County leaders were officially sworn in Tuesday, but some have already started work on several big issues. One of their most pressing concerns is a new 911 center.A task force was assembled in November to figure out what direction the county needs to take. Commissioners told ABC 17 News they are still waiting on their final report, but they have several suggestions, including higher taxes to pay for a new facility.”It’s a countywide operation and should involve a new building on the sheriff’s campus, covered by sales tax,” Boone County Commissioner Karen Miller says.Commissioners told us they do not know how much it will cost, how much the sales tax will be, or how many extra positions they need to hire. But the details have to be figured out quickly if they want the measure on the April ballot. “Getting the building number, getting the numbers that are needed to increase the staffing, and we will need to have that by January 22,” Miller says. The commission is scheduled to have its next meeting Thursday. They are expected to talk about it even though it is not on the agenda.
