Cole County adds more roads to flooded list
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
Cole County officials are closing more roads because of river and creek flooding while saturated ground and high creeks have caused the state to close three Boone County highways.
Cole County added two new roads -- the 1400 block of Blue Ridge Road and the 5600 block of Walnut Acres Road -- to its list of closings just before noon as rainfall continued in parts of Mid-Missouri.
The Missouri Department of Transportation reported closures of three highways in Boone County -- Route CC between Centralia and Sturgeon, Route E north of Columbia and Route ZZ (Strawn Road) in Columbia -- on its online map Thursday afternoon.
Flood warnings were in place Thursday for the Missouri River at Jefferson City and Hermann. The Moreau River at Jefferson City was also above flood stage Thursday. The National Weather Service predicts both rivers will go below flood stage at Jefferson City over the weekend or early next week.
Storms rolled through the area late Wednesday and early Thursday after heavy rain soaked the ground earlier in the week. The weather service measured close to an inch of rain at the Columbia Regional Airport between about 7 p.m. Wednesday and 1 a.m. Thursday.
Some snow mixed in with rain Thursday morning around the area but did not stick.
Cole County Public Works said earlier Thursday that 11 roads were closed around the county because of flooding -- three of them had closed on Monday for the same reason.
