Weather Alert Day: Dangerous heat returns to Mid-Missouri Sunday and Monday

The ABC 17 Stormtrack Weather Team has issued a Weather Alert Day for Sunday and Monday as dangerous heat is expected to build across the region toward the end of the weekend.

We're currently underneath northwest upper wind flow as the jet stream is overhead, keeping temperatures cooler than normal through Friday.

Upper high pressure continues to build over the Plains and will inch to the each by the weekend, increasing temperatures to the upper 80s on Saturday. With surface winds coming out of the south, we'll see the heat index climb to near 100 degrees on Saturday.

Dew points increase even more on Sunday, with readings in the low to mid-70s. That number, in combination with highs in the lower to mid-90s, will yield heat index values near 105 degrees or higher.

Remember to stay hydrated with plenty of water and electrolyte drinks if you do have to spend longer periods of time outside. Take breaks indoors and make sure your pets have a cool place to rest along with plenty of water. Limit their walks to around dawn or dusk to keep them safe in these conditions.
