JC Schools sees only minimal bus delays amid Tuesday’s late start, district said
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ) -
Officials with the Jefferson City School District said everything went as expected during Tuesday morning's adjusted start time.
Superintendent Larry Linthacum announced a 2-hour delay shortly after 5 a.m. Tuesday.
JC Schools spokesperson Ryan Burns told ABC 17 News that some busses were slightly behind schedule, but those delays were not unexpected.
"We had a few minor bus delays (10-15 min), which is expected as drivers proceed cautiously to ensure we get all students to school safely," said Burns in an email. "We greatly appreciate our maintenance and custodial team who worked hard to get buildings ready, and we are tremendously thankful for the road crews in our community who work diligently to improve road conditions around the clock. We couldn't be in school without their efforts."
Jefferson City Public Works' operations division director Britt Smith said the department's full road crew returned to the streets for treatment at 5 a.m. Tuesday and completed their work between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m.
"The storm yesterday was kind of tough because of its timing," said Smith. "It made it difficult with staffing, but we managed it about as well as expected."
"The public works department utilized 1,000 tons of salt since the snow event began Sunday, representing nearly a third of the 3,100-ton stockpile it had on hand.
The department usually keeps about 3,500 tons in its salt barns, when the supply is full.
Clearing sidewalks of snow and ice is the responsibility of the adjacent property owner, according to city ordinance.
Smith said businesses and public entities are usually more timely with compliance of the ordinance, but that residents usually take more time to comply if they do at all.
