What does the $1.9 trillion dollar stimulus package mean for Missouri?

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The U.S. House is expected to vote on and approve the $1.9 trillion dollar coronavirus stimulus package known as The American Rescue Plan this week.

The package will likely pass easily Wednesday with Democrats in control of the House and move on to President Joe Biden's desk. The Senate passed the package Saturday on a party-line vote of 50-49.

Missouri could receive more than $5.3 billion from the new stimulus, according to a USA Today analysis.

Boone County Northern District Commissioner Janet Thompson said the county received $21 million dollars last May as a part of the CARES Act relief funding. The CARES Act passed with $2.2 trillion dollars in funds allocated for pandemic relief funds.

Boone County would get about $18 million if it receives the same percentage of Missouri's money as it did with the CARES Act last spring.

But according to USA TODAY's analysis of the new bill, Boone County should receive $35 million dollars. The analysis states Cole County should receive around $14.88 million and Callaway County should receive around $8.67 million in funding.

After it is approved and signed, Thompson said Boone County will first look at the package to see what's spending is authorized.

"Our goal, just like we did with the CARES Act funding, is to make sure that if the federal government gives money to Boone County, every dime of it will be spent here in Boone County," Thompson said. "We're going to make sure that the people here in Boone County that have suffered a loss of one form or another through this time, get the funding to try to make them whole."

Thompson said when Boone County will receive funding depends on how the money is authorized. Thompson says this funding could make a real difference for the people of Boone County.

"I'm excited because I know of so many stories of people that have been affected by the pandemic in their personal lives and business," Thompson said. "And if this can help us (be in a) better condition going forward, I think that's huge."
