17-year-old charged as an adult in July 2020 second-degree murder case in east Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia teen is now charged with two counts of second-degree murder for his alleged role in the deaths of two people on July 5 in east Columbia.

According to Assistant Prosecutor Jessica Caldera, 17-year-old Iseah Jackson was certified as an adult at a hearing in juvenile court today.

Caldera says she believes Jackson, 16 at the time, displayed a gun in a "threatening manner" in the presence of others, leading to the deaths of two people. While she believes Jackson fired his gun, the charges do not claim he actually shot anyone.

The July 5 shooting left two dead and five injured at the scene on Volunteer drive and North Grace lane. The two victims were an 11-year-old and 38-year-old.

The shooting caused problems with first responders due to a breakdown in radio communication at the scene.

Columbia police reported finding multiple victims, some of which had serious injuries and took them to a local hospital cause EMS was not on scene.

In a joint statement from Columbia Police Department, University of Missouri Health Care, Boone Hospital Center and Boone County Joint Communications determined police at the scene requested medics, that medics were waiting outside the scene to hear it was stable and secure enough for them to enter and that "the request for medics by law enforcement was not relayed as expected."

The statement says the agencies will begin monitoring cross-radio traffic to ensure better communication; that police will provide clear communication to first responders at violent crime scenes; that agencies will participate in ride-alongs with other agencies; and that joint training scenarios will be developed.
