Health officials hope for small gatherings this Super Bowl Sunday
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Columbia/Boone County Health Department is recommending people choose to watch the Super Bowl in their own households this year with small groups of people.
Department spokeswoman Sara Humm said even with this guidance the health department expects people to gather at indoor public places.
"We know people will go out to bars/restaurants and house parties, so continue doing the things we have been talking about for months, wearing a mask, social distancing, washing hands, and avoiding large gatherings," she said.
Laura Rey Dickey, the CEO of Dickey's Barbecue, said the Super Bowl is one of the biggest days of the year for business, and hopes health regulations won't affect it.
"We hope we have done everything possible to communicate to guests that there is lots of different ways to enjoy bbq even if that's letting us bring the 'Q' to you," she said.
Due to the pandemic, some local bars and restaurants having been struggling financially and depend on days like the Super Bowl to increase business.
"I love that the big game is happening because it is big business for the restaurant industry and we need that," Dickey said.
The health department has continued to keep in touch with local bars and restaurants to make sure they know what the regulations are.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention posted safety recommendations for people to enjoy the Super Bowl amid the pandemic.
The CDC recommends hosting a virtual watch party or attending an outdoor viewing party where people can be 6feet apart.
Safety steps for indoor gatherings include:
- Encourage guests to bring their own food and drinks
- Have one person serve all the food
- Wear a mask
- Stay 6 feet apart from people who do not live with you
- Avoid crowded, poorly ventilated areas
- Wash your hands
If you develop symptoms of COVID-19 within 14 days of the gathering, or if you test positive, immediately tell the host and anyone else who attended.
