Officials warn of power outages and dangerous driving conditions for the New Year
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The New Year is bringing a round of ice and snow that could cause power outages and slippery roads.
As road crews across Mid-Missouri are preparing to battle the ice, Boone Electric Cooperative also has crews on the ready to fix any power outages caused by the storm.
A spokeswoman for the cooperative Rhonda Proctor said it's crew are prepared for outage calls, and have the ability to call in more workers if this becomes a major event.
Proctor said if someone does come across a downed powerline near their home or in the road, they should never attempt to move or drive over them.
"Always call Boone Electric at our main number to report a downed line, or you can also call 911 to report it," Proctor said. "But never ever get close to one."
She said crews work as fast as they can, but also have to be careful about the roads.
"We also will also be on the ice and we want to make sure our crews are safe," Proctor said.
While customers wait for the power to come back on, Proctor said it's important to be prepared by having charged flashlights, fully charged cell phones and other essentials nearby.
If people are using generators, she said it's extremely important to let your provider know that information so crews can be safe while restoring power. She also mentioned having the generator outside, so it doesn't cause carbon monoxide poisoning.
Columbia's Assistant Fire Chief Brad Fraizer said ice can cause several different issues, and urged people to stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.
He said the most important this is to take your time while driving and be prepared by having blankets, a flashlight, food and other essentials if you do get stuck.
"We encourage people not to get out if it's avoidable because your car is a really good shelter," Fraizer said. "Conserve your battery, use your emergency flashers when you see other vehicles approaching."
He said the Columbia Fire Department is not increasing staffing tonight, but are well equipped to deal with any situations that may come up.
