COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A man safely escaped a burning home in central Columbia early Tuesday morning.

The Columbia Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 600 block of McBaine Avenue shortly after 3:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The Columbia Fire Department said in a Tuesday morning release the flames caused $30,000 in damage. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze within 10 minutes.

ABC 17 News crews spoke with the home's renter who said his smoke alarm woke him up and he was able to get out safely. The Red Cross is providing assistance to the man, the release said.

Columbia Fire Department Division Captain John Metz said a dog died in the fire.

Fire investigators are working to determine what caused it. Metz said there was no damage to surrounding residences.

ABC 17 News crews saw smoke billowing from the home and flames through the windows. Several fire engines and firefighters responded to the scene.
