Missouri State Penitentiary reopens to tourists
The Missouri State Penitentiary is back open Tuesday after more than four months of closure due to tornado damage.
The attraction brought nearly 34,000 tourists in 2018.
A structural inspection of the penitentiary found varying degrees of damage to the roof, the walls and other areas of the building.
The estimated cost of damage was more than $9 million. This includes multiple housing units in which the inmates lived that are regularly shown to tourists.
The inspection also concluded there were structural issues with the penitentiary prior to the tornado damage.
There are several different types of tours people can take through the penitentiary with varying prices.
