Mizzou football parents say they are left with the bill after NCAA ruling

COLUMBIA, Mo. - Multiple parents of Mizzou football players have voiced concern over the NCAA's ruling and uncertainty about what lies ahead.

The NCAA denied Mizzou's appeal and upheld all of the previous sanctions. Included in those sanctions are postseason bans for Mizzou baseball, softball and football this year.

If Mizzou football beats Arkansas, it would've become bowl eligible at 6-6. Based on the NCAA's ruling, it still would not be able to participate in a bowl game. When teams go to a bowl game, players each get a daily stipend from their particular bowl to use for food, travel, etc.

Multiple parents have expressed that this ruling puts families in a bind, because they no longer will get that money.

Gerald Nathan Sr., father of linebacker Gerald Nathan Jr., said, "On our team, we have a lot of single mothers that can't afford to send for their kids to come home. Now since the NCAA came in and took this away from them, it is hard on some of these parents to try to get their kids home or to keep them where they are now."

Due to their commitment to being a full-time student athlete, players are unable to have time to take on part-time jobs while in school. Each Mizzou athlete will still get their scholarships and Mizzou stipends, but Nathan Sr. and other parents said families and players often count on bowl money to help supplement costs.

Walk-on players receive nothing and are left with less given that they do not have scholarship money.

"You have kids that are hours and hours away from home that are now in a bind or a jam," Nathan Sr. said.

Nathan Sr. and other parents said they have not heard from the NCAA, and they only get information from what their sons and daughters tell them.

Nathan Sr. said, "At the end of the day, if it really is about these players, that's how we have to look at it. Is it really about these kids?"
