13 horses die in eastern Missouri accident

WASHINGTON, Mo. (AP) — Thirteen horses are dead and others are injured after a traffic accident in eastern Missouri.

KMOV-TV reports that the accident happened Sunday night in Franklin County when a tractor-trailer carrying 29 horses tipped over on Interstate 44.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Firefighters, veterinarians and crews from a large animal rescue group all worked to remove the horses from the highway.

The surviving horses were taken to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch in Union, which is not far from the accident site.

The truck driver was not seriously hurt.
