Second person submits petition in Columbia’s First Ward

Gregory Pierson submitted petition to run for Columbia's First Ward council seat

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

First Ward voters could see a contested city council election on their April ballots.

Columbia City Clerk Sheela Amin tells ABC 17 News that Gregory Pierson turned in a petition for a chance to represent Columbia's First Ward. The election will be held in April. To run, candidates must first get 50 registered voters in their ward to sign the petition.

Pierson tells ABC 17 News he is a freshman at MU. He said he would send more information about the campaign on Friday.

First Ward Councilman Clyde Ruffin has said he will not seek re-election. Pat Fowler, who's on Columbia's Historic Preservation Commission, turned in her petition Tuesday to run for the First Ward seat.

The first day to pick up petitions was Oct. 29 and the deadline to turn them in is Jan. 14. The First and Fifth wards are the only city council seats up for election in April.

Fifth Ward Councilman Matt Pitzer has turned in a petition but is the only person to have done so in the Fifth Ward.
