Jefferson City dangerous building list open to the public

Jefferson City has created a new dangerous building list that's available for the public to view.

"We wanted to be transparent, we wanted the folks that are out here in the neighborhood to know that we're trying, we're going through the process and we're holding owners accountable," said Housing Property Inspector Dave Helmick.

The city will constantly update the list on its website as new buildings are deemed dangerous, owners make corrections or buildings change ownership.

Helmick said the city will receive multiple complaints from neighbors when progress is not made at a fast pace.

"It might take three to four months or six months to get through the process," he said.

1716 Four Seasons Drive was added to the list Thursday after no progress was made to correct issues found by inspectors, Helmick said. It's the only property currently listed that was damaged by the tornado.

Helmick said the city typically gives a property owner 15 to 30 days to make corrections.

"If an owner fails, an administrative hearing is held and evidence is presented," Helmick said.

The hearing will determine whether the building violates the city's dangerous building code.
