Two men shot during an alleged south Columbia burglary -- one of them fatally -- broke into the home through a window, according to court documents.

Darion J. Logan, 27, was pronounced dead at the scene in the 6000 block of Bentpath Lane, the Columbia Police Department said in a news release Thursday.

Police say Logan and Fabian D. Goldman, 28, both of Columbia were found shot after a report of a burglary at about 9 p.m. Wednesday. Goldman was booked into the Boone County Jail.

Goldman was charged Thursday with second-degree murder and first-degree burglary. He was denied bond.

Missouri law allows a suspect to be charged with murder when another person dies in the commission of a felony, whether the suspect fired the shots or not.

Goldman was medically cleared before being booked, police said.

A probable cause statement in Goldman's case says Goldman and Logan broke a window in the downstairs area of the home to get inside at about 9 p.m.

A person living at the home got a gun and went downstairs and shot the two men, according to the statement. The statement says two elderly people were home at the time of the burglary.

Michael Szewczyk, a neighbor and president of the Highlands Homes Association, said he was shocked to hear about the incident as he has lived in the area for over 20 years and no major crimes had occurred.

“It's something that we always know could happen,” Szewczyk said. “And you always read about people trying to gain access and home invasions and that kind of thing but you don't ever expect it to happen, you know right close to where you live.”

According to a news release from CPD, a resident reported seeing two people break into his home. He told police he fired several shots in self-defense, shooting the two suspects.

According to Columbia Police Dispatch records, CPD has yet to be called to that neighborhood at all in the last 10 years for major crimes.

Szewczyk said the situation has the residents on edge with many outlying questions.

“I think everybody thinks about was this some random incident,” Szewczyk said. “How did this come about? Was there already a connection? We just don't have enough information to know at this point and I'm sure that most of the residents in the neighborhood will be looking for that information.”

Anyone with information about this incident can contact the Columbia Police Department at 573.874.7652 or CrimeStoppers at 573.875.TIPS (8477) to remain anonymous.
