Mizzou WBB falls short in OT
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Mizzou women's basketball team lost 90-85 to Nebraska in overtime on Sunday afternoon. The Tigers are now 1-1 on the season.
Aijha Blackwell had a chance to seal the win at the free-throw line in regulation, but she missed both free throws. Nebraska's Sam Haiby hit a game-tying three pointer on the ensuing possession to send the game to overtime.
"Those two free throws are crucial. It's still a lot on my head, but I just gotta get in the gym," Blackwell said after the game. "A thousand a day - that has to be my focus because free throws have been a struggle for me lately."
Nebraska outscored the Tigers 14-9 in the extra period - handing Mizzou its first loss of the season.
"Probably the most disappointing thing to me is our defense and our ability to rebound the ball, so we've got some work to do," Head coach Robin Pingeton said after the game. "We knew going into this season it was going to be a marathon not a sprint, but we gotta start owning some things and you know, making progress in some of those areas."
Despite her struggles at the free-throw line, Blackwell finished the game with a career-high 21 points, four assists and four rebounds.
"She's got to bow up and understand that it's bigger than those free-throws, and we wouldn't have even been in that situation without her," Pingeton said.
Senior Amber Smith had 20 points and 14 rebounds. She was one of three MU players with a double-double.
Up next - Mizzou will host Northern Iowa on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
