This Week in Sports Recap
Death, taxes, and Frank Gore signing a one-year deal. In a time when nothing else in sports seems normal, the veteran running back is coming back again. Here’s a look at the big stories from the past week in the sports world:
LOCAL:
- Mizzou basketball secures first 2021 commit: The Tigers offered Anton Brookshire a scholarship on Tuesday and by Thursday he had announced his commitment to Mizzou. The junior guard from Kickapoo High School averaged 20.5 points per game this past season.
- NFL Schedule Released: With no live sports to televise, ESPN and the NFL Network dedicated three hours of programming to the NFL schedule release on Thursday night. The big news for Chiefs fans? The first game of the 2020 NFL season will feature the reigning Super Bowl champs against the Houston Texans on Thursday, Sept. 10th, barring any setbacks due to the coronavirus.
- Jefferson City Renegades will not play this season: The MINK League announced on Tuesday that the season will be delayed until at least July 1. Furthermore, the Jefferson City Renegades announced they will not play at all this year. The MINK League is a summer college baseball league consisting of nine teams across Missouri, Kansas, Iowa and Nebraska. The Renegades began play in this league in 2017.
NATIONAL:
- Don Shula passes away: The winningest coach in NFL history passed away on Monday at the age of 90. Shula coached the Miami Dolphins to the only undefeated season in NFL history in 1972 and won the Super Bowl in 1972 and 1973.
- Frank Gore signs one-year deal with Jets: The 36-year-old running back will re-unite with Jets head coach Adam Gase, who coached him in Miami in 2018. Gore’s 15,347 career rushing yards are third in NFL history, trailing only Walter Payton and Emmitt Smith. The Jets will be Gore’s fourth team in the last four years.
- Taulia Tagavailoa enters transfer portal: The younger brother of Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, Taulia announced he will leave Alabama and play his two remaining seasons elsewhere. Tagovailoa committed to Alabama over Tennessee in 2018, and the Volunteers are believed to be in consideration once again.
