ORIGINAL: The Jefferson City Police Department identified the suspect killed in an officer-involved shooting that happened Wednesday night.
JCPD spokesman Lt. David Williams said 28-year-old Anthony Wilson was killed in the shootout near the intersection of East Atchison Street and Jackson Street. A Jefferson City officer was also shot in the exchange and was reported stable. Lt. Williams said the officer was released from the hospital on Thursday afternoon.
Police said Wilson was suspected of multiple shootings reported on Tuesday. According to a news release, he was in possession of a stolen gun linked to a December 2019 burglary.
The police department said officers chased Wilson and 27-year-old Jamie Williams across the city prior to the shooting. The release said the younger suspect drove a silver Ford car involved in the chase.
Officers said both suspects had extensive criminal histories. The release included they were both on mandatory parole after each was accused of being a felon in possession of a firearm.
As of Thursday, Williams, who is accused of driving the car during the chase, had been held in the Cole County Jail. Police said they recommended charges of second-degree murder and first-degree assault on an officer to the Cole County Prosecuting Attorney.
In a previous release, the police department said officers noticed the suspects' vehicle near the location of a shooting that was called out around 10:20 p.m. last night.
Police said the suspects took off on West McCarty Street and continued onto Highway 54. The chase eventually ended at the intersection of Atchison and Jackson streets.
Both suspects got out of the car and ran into a wooded area, police said. Officers say one of the suspects pulled out a gun and fired at police.
One officer was shot in the chest and was wearing a ballistic vest. Another officer returned fire and fatally wounded Wilson.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop F spokesman Sgt. Scott White said the Division of Drug and Crime Control is investigating the officer-involved shooting.
