Pair of Mizzou standouts earn SEC weekly honors

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Following a win over Kansas in enemy territory, on Friday, a pair of Tiger standouts have earned weekly honors from the Southeastern Conference.

Quarterback Austin Simmons, alongside defensive end Daeden Hopkins were each named SEC Players of the Week, the conference announced on Monday morning.

Simmons earned co-Offensive Player of the Week honors, after shining in the Border War showdown out in Lawrence. He completed 19-of-29 of his passes for 292 yards and three touchdowns. Simmons shared the Offensive Player of the Week honors with Texas quarterback Arch Manning, who led the Longhorns to a win over No. 1 Ohio State, on Saturday.

Simmons was also named to the Davey O'Brien Great 8 list of his performance against the Jayhawks.

Meanwhile, Hopkins had a breakout game on the other side of the ball, earning him SEC co-Defensive Lineman of the Week honors. The Hermann, Missouri native recorded 4.5 tackles, including 1.5 sacks, while adding five quarterback pressures and a pass deflection to help lead the Tigers to victory. It is the first time in his career that he's earned this award.

Up next - No. 20 Mizzou will return home to host Troy on Saturday, Sept. 19 at 6 p.m. The game will honor the 100th anniversary of Memorial Stadium.
