Play suspended between Mizzou and No. 1 Nebraska at Wrigley Field

CHICAGO, Ill. (KMIZ)

What was set to be a historic match between Mizzou volleyball and No. 1 Nebraska at Wrigley Field took an unexpected turn, on Sunday night.

After two lengthy stoppages in play due to unsafe conditions on the playing surface, officials announced that the game between the Tigers and the Cornhuskers was officially suspended. The Wrigley Field announcer added that rescheduling the matchup at the iconic venue 'will not be possible.'

As for the future of the match, as a whole, Mizzou and Nebraska ended things with the Huskers up 11-7 in the first set. Cornhusker head coach Dani Busboom Kelly and Tiger head coach Dawn Sullivan both voiced that they hope the meeting between their two teams can be rescheduled for another time.

"You know, I would love to play them and so we're looking for some opportunities to see what that might look like and we'll figure that out," Sullivan said.

During that press conference after play was called, Busboom Kelly said that this result said a lot about what the future of outdoor matches should be.

"This was amazing. I applaud the effort," she said. "There's a reason why our sport is indoors, and there's a a lot of amazing indoor arenas or football fields indoor or baseball fields that have domes, like you saw us play one this year, an exhibition. So, I think there's opportunities to do some incredible things for volleyball. I do not think outdoor is what we should be doing."
