1 dead and several injured in downtown Minneapolis shooting that wounded 2 police officers, officials say

(CNN) — One person has died and at least five others were injured in a shooting in downtown Minneapolis Wednesday, officials said. Two officers were among those injured, police told CNN, but no other details were provided.
Hennepin County Medical Center confirmed to CNN it received six patients after the shooting and one died. Police asked people to avoid the area of 15 East Grant Street.
Around 5:45 p.m. local time, dozens of police cars and officers surrounded the scene, as pedestrians continued walking through the area.
Though many officers, SWAT vehicles and EMS remained at the scene around 6:30 p.m. local time, authorities appeared to be maintaining a calm presence.
The surrounding area is home to an apartment complex, the Minneapolis Convention Center, hotels and a hospital.
Nearby University of St. Thomas’ Minneapolis campus is on lockdown “out of an abundance of caution,” a spokesperson told CNN.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said in a Facebook post his public safety team is responding to the shooting and state officials are on the ground.
“Grateful to law enforcement actively working to ensure the safety of our neighbors in Downtown Minneapolis this afternoon,” the governor said in a subsequent post. “Minnesota is praying for our first responders.”
Neighboring police agencies, as well as the Minnesota State Patrol, are “working closely” with the Minneapolis Police Department after the shooting, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said in a post on X.
Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the FBI are also responding to the shooting, the agencies said on X.
