Mizzou soccer falls in opening home game of the year

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Tigers suffered their first loss of the season to in-state rival Saint Louis, 1-0.

Mizzou ushered in the 2026-27 athletic season at the newly renovated Walton Stadium. Head coach Stefanie Golan's team started the season with a win and a tie through their opening two contests. As they return home, more than 2,300 Mizzou faithful were in attendance to watch the home opener, breaking the previous attendance record.

After a dominant showing in the win over Murray state, it was a much slower start to the action for the Tigers, with SLU going on offense first. The Bilikins recorded three shots in the first 12 minutes of play, all on target, but all saved by Kate Phillips.

In the 17th minute, Mia Devrouax committed an error for Mizzou, giving Saint Louis a Penalty kick with a late challenge at the edge of the box. Jeanette Fieldsend would step up and convert for the Bills, given them the first score of the game.

Their offensive onslaught continued, but Phillips was even better between the pipes, recording five saves in the first half alone, and not allowing another score. The Tigers' best chance of the opening half came on an Emily Derucki tap in, which was overturned due to an offsides ruling.

Coming out of the second half, Mizzou found more life on the attacking end, finally recording its first shot of the game in the 54th minute. From that point, the pressure was on, with SLU put onto the back foot.

Despite Mizzou having its chances, they were never able to break through, with Saint Louis taking the win 1-0.

Up Next - The Tigers will travel to Springfield for another in-state match against Missouri State. Kick off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 23.
