COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Vienna Fire Protection District finished installing mile markers on the Gasconade River in Maries County on Saturday, according to a social media post from the district.

The Saturday post says the last 19 markers were placed on Saturday. The department says the new markers should be able to help during emergencies.

“These markers are more than just signs they are a critical tool for river safety. In an emergency, being able to tell dispatchers your exact location using a mile marker can significantly reduce response times and help first responders get to you faster when every second counts. Over the years Vienna Fire has been called out numerous times for lost floaters, especially at night,” the post says.

The post also says the mile markers can be viewed on GIS systems.
