Tracking dangerous heat ahead of more storm chances later this week

TODAY: Tuesday starts with some showers and thunderstorms, but severe weather is unlikely. Flooding will be a concern if areas see repeated heavy rains. Grounds are still saturated after Monday's flooding. Temperatures will become the big focus, with rain drying up this morning. Increased sunshine will help boost highs back to near 90°, but with present humidity, we will feel more like 103°.

TONIGHT: While we can't rule out an isolated evening shower or storm, dry weather is forecast through the evening and into the overnight. Not much break from the heat is expected tonight, with temperatures in the 70s with continued mugginess.

EXTENDED: Wednesday is another day of dangerous heat indexes in the triple digits. Wednesday is mostly dry, but storms may develop across northwest Missouri late in the afternoon. This may impact our northwestern counties, with strong to severe storms that may drift in from the west. This may impact Columbia and Jefferson City, but chances are low. Greater chances of storms will come on Thursday afternoon and evening, after another hot day. Storms are expected to develop ahead of a cold front Thursday afternoon and evening. Severe weather is expected Thursday night. Tuesday through Thursday are ABC17 Stormtrack Weather Alert Days. Read our online blog for the latest on dangerous heat and severe weather threats. Cooler conditions are forecast for Friday through the weekend, with another cold front expected to drop highs into the low 80s, if not the 70s, by early next week.
