Mizzou’s hot start not enough to take down South Carolina

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Despite being the first team on the board, the Tigers couldn't hang on to beat South Carolina, falling 5-2.

In the first inning of the game, Mizzou sent a message early. Stefania Abruscato blasted one over the right field wall for the opening score. Abby Hay followed suit just two batter later and gave the home side a 2-0 lead.

Beyond that, the bats cooled quickly, allowing for South Carolina to retaliate. The Gamecocks got a run back on a sacrifice fly in the second, and managed to tie the game at two in the fourth.

With all of the momentum behind them, the visitors continued their onslaught, with a two run shot to take the lead in the fifth courtesy of Jamie Mackay. Another sacrifice fly in the seventh capped off the 5-0 scoring run for South Carolina, and Mizzou was never able to respond.

Up Next - Game two between the Tigers and Gamecocks is set to get underway on Saturday, April 18. First pitch for the game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
