Police say victim in Sunday night Columbia shooting has died

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Columbia Police said Monday that a man shot in a residential area Sunday night has died.

Michael R. Burke, 42, of Columbia, was killed in the shooting that was called in at about 8 p.m. Sunday. Burke died at a local hospital, Columbia Police wrote in a Facebook post.

Officers were sent to the 1400 block of Ridgemont Court at about 8:15 p.m. and found Burke shot. It's not clear what led up to the shooting. Police said Sunday that Burke had life-threatening injuries.

"Columbia Police have detained multiple individuals regarding this homicide investigation," CPD wrote in the Facebook post. "Additional details will be released at a later time."

CPD said Sunday night that there is no threat to the public.

People living in the neighborhood said they had not seen any unusual activity at the house where the shooting happened, but that the owner had only moved there in the past year or so. Many neighbors described the area as quiet and safe.

CPD asks anyone with any information related to the shooting to contact the department or crimestoppers.
