Diamondbacks acquire Nolan Arenado from the Cardinals

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMIZ)
Eight-time All Star and 10-time Gold Glove award winner Nolan Arenado is headed Phoenix.
On Tuesday, the St. Louis Cardinals announced a trade with the Arizona Diamondbacks, sending the club Arenado and cash considerations in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jack Martinez.
The trade will end Arenado's five-season run as the third baseman for the birds on the bat. ESPN reported that the 34-year-old agreed to waive his no-trade clause to complete the deal, on Tuesday. He still had two years left on the eight-year deal he signed with the St. Louis, when he left the Colorado Rockies before the 2019 season.
The trade was no surprise for Cardinal fans, in fact, the entire offseason before the 2025 season was dominated by talks that Arenado may not return with to the team. He ended up showing up in spring training and playing on more year in St. Louis.
In his final season with the Cardinals, Arenado battled injury, hitting .237 with 12 home runs and a career-low .289 on-base percentage through 107 games.
However, he did find success and hit a few career milestones in his time with the Cards. In 2022, he reached 1,000 career RBIS in a season where he hit more than 30 home runs and drove in more than 100 base runners. As a result, he finished third in National League MVP voting that season.
Arenado was voted an All-Star, earned Silver Slugger awards for his hitting and also won National League Player of the Week honors in 2022.
The Cardinals will now take on Martinez, who was an eighth-round selection in last year's draft out of Arizona State.
