Reports: Mizzou starting safety becomes 20th player to throw name into transfer portal

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The number of Mizzou football players that have opted to hit the transfer portal has grown to 20.

The latest reportedly came on Friday afternoon, when CBS Sports and 247sports insiders broke that starting safety Marvin Burks Jr. entered the transfer portal.

The St. Louis native spent three seasons in Columbia, making an immediate impact from his freshman season on. In 2025, he ended his junior season playing 605 snaps, as he tallied 49 total tackles (27 solo), 1.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, one pass breakup and one interception, which he returned for a touchdown.

Head coach Eli Drinkwitz will now need to put an emphasis on his safety room, following the departure of Burks Jr. and the graduation of veterans Daylan Carnell and Jalen Catalon. Without Burks Jr. on the roster, the most veteran returner will be Santana Banner, who transferred to Mizzou ahead of the 2025 campaign. He finished the year with 59 total tackles (30 solo), 1.0 tackle for loss, one interception and three pass breakups.
