Vehicle catches fire on I-70 causing lanes to be shut down

BOONEVILLE, Mo. (KMIZ)

A multi-vehicle crash shut down both directions of Interstate 70 near mile marker 91, just west of Boonville, Saturday night.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, at least one vehicle caught fire after the crash. Photos shared by troopers show heavy smoke and damaged vehicles across the roadway.

By 10 p.m., crews were still working to extinguish the flames as wreckers prepared to remove the mangled vehicles from the highway.

Both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-70 were closed for several hours, with westbound traffic slowing near mile marker 94. At 10:30, MSHP reported that the eastbound driving lane had been reopened. Both lanes were reopened by 11:30 p.m.

MSHP Corporal Kyle Green told ABC 17 News Saturday night that no injuries had been reported. Green also said on Sunday that three vehicles were involved in the crash. Multiple vehicles and trailers were destroyed by fire, according to Green.

What caused the crash is unknown.

Drivers were urged to avoid the area and expect delays.
