Chiefs overcome slow offensive start for first win of the season

KMIZ

NEW YORK, N.Y. (KMIZ)

After three games, the Kansas City Chiefs finally have a mark in the win column.

Head coach Andy Reid and his team overcame a slow start offensively and scored 13 points in the second half to notch its first victory of the 2025 season, beating the New York Giants 22-9. That win lifted KC to 1-2 on the year.

Kansas City did not score a single touchdown in the first half, with all nine points coming off the leg of kicker Harrison Butker. Despite those struggles on offense, the Chiefs carried a 9-6 lead into the locker room at halftime.

After the break, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his offense finally found a rhythm. They found end zone for the first time midway through the third quarter, as Mahomes found receiver Tyquan Thornton on a five-yard touchdown pass to complete an 11-play, 74-yard drive.

The Chiefs gave themselves a little breathing room against New York in the fourth quarter, as running back Kareem Hunt punched in a score from one-yard out to give his team a 13-point lead.

Mahomes finished the game completing 59 percent of his passes for 224 yards and one touchdown. His go-to receiver Tyquan Thornton, who caught five passes for 71 yards.

However, Mahomes did a good job of spreading the ball around, as five other players tallied double digits yards on Sunday night. Receiver Juju Smith-Schuster was second on the team with 55 yards and Marquise 'Hollywood' Brown brought up third with 42 yards receiving.

Defensively, Mizzou alum Nick Bolton led the charge for coordinator Steve Spagnuolo's unit, as he recorded a team-high 14 total tackles, including two tackles for loss.

Up next - Kansas City will look to get a winning streak going against an AFC foe. The Chiefs will host the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday, Sept. 2 at 3:25 p.m.
