2 elderly people injured in semi-truck crash on I-70

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Two people were injured in a crash that led to traffic becoming blocked Tuesday afternoon on eastbound Interstate 70 outside of Columbia.

The MoDOT Traveler's Map lists eastbound I-70 near the Midway exit as closed due to a crash. Assistant Boone County Fire Protection District chief Gale Blomenkamp tells ABC 17 News that the crash led to at least two people injured.

A Missouri State Highway Patrol crash report later said the crash occurred in the westbound lane, west of Highway 40.

The report says an 81-year-old man from Buford, Georgia, made an “unsafe lane change” in his 2024 Ford Transit and hit a 2015 Kenworth W9. The tractor-trailer was driven by a 25-year-old man from Lawrence, Arkansas.

The Ford then went off the left side of the road, hit a cable barrier and stopped in the middle of the eastbound lane. Driver and a passenger – a 75-year-old woman from Buford, Georgia – suffered moderate injuries and were brought to University Hospital by ambulance, the report says.

Everyone involved in the crash wore seatbelts. MSHP reports do not name those involved in crashes.
