Troopers identify Arizona man killed in shootout with patrol in Saline County
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ) -
The Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the man killed in a shootout with state troopers in Saline County.
The patrol's Troop A posted on X Wednesday night that 23-year-old Francis Alcantar-Chavez of Tempe, Arizona died Tuesday night. The patrol said a trooper shot Alcantar after he allegedly fired at troopers trying to arrest him near Sweet Springs.
The patrol said Alcantar was wanted for a June 15 double homicide in Taylor, Arizona, a city about three hours northeast of Phoenix. ABC 15 in Phoenix said police suspected Alcantar killed 53-year-old Cynthia Templeton and 62-year-old Troy Templeton, both members of the Arizona Rangers auxiliary law enforcement agency. ABC 15 identified Alcantar as Cynthia Templeton's son.
Concordia, Missouri police tried to stop Alcantar on a motorcycle just after 6 p.m. Troopers said Alcantar crashed into a trooper's car around 115th Street and Belmont Avenue outside of Sweet Springs just before 8 p.m. that night. The patrol said during a foot chase, Alcantar shot at a trooper, hitting them in their bulletproof vest. The trooper shot back and killed Alcantar.
The trooper had minor injuries from the shooting, and was released from the hospital on Tuesday night.
The patrol said Wednesday night its investigation into the shooting was still ongoing. The Saline County prosecutor will review the case for any potential criminal charges.
