Mississippi State run-rules Mizzou to secure series win

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

For the second-straight night, the Mizzou baseball team allowed Mississippi State's bats to stay scorching hot from start-to-finish at Taylor Stadium, as the Bulldogs run-ruled the Tigers 13-3 in seven innings to secure the series win.

With the series loss for Mizzou, skipper Kerrick Jackson and company only won one Southeastern Conference series through the 2025 campaign. The team now sits with a 16-38 overall record and a 3-27 mark in SEC play.

It was clear from the start, that just one night after falling to Mississippi State 25-7, the Tigers were in for another long night.

In the first inning, the Bulldogs plated five runs, courtesy of a sacrifice grounder, an RBI single and a Joe Powell home run to deep center field. With a five-run lead in hand, Mississippi State did not take its foot off the gas. In fact, the very next inning, the away team hit its second home run of the game and got up by eight runs on Mizzou.

MU finally managed to respond with a two-run frame in the third inning, but it didn't make much of a dent, as MSU kept pouring it on. In total, the Bulldogs hit four home runs in Friday night's win. That total combined with Thursday's record-setting eight home run night brings Mississippi State's grand total of home runs in Columbia to 12 through two games.

Starter Tony Neubeck was handed the loss on the hill, to drop to 1-5 in 2025. He threw for 2.0 innings and allowed eight runs, five of which were earned, on seven hits.

Coach Jackson put three other pitchers out on the mound on Friday. St. Elizabeth alum Brock Lucas came in in relief for Neubeck, but didn't have much better luck. He yielded four earned runs on three hits in 3.1 innings of action.

The only pitcher to not let any runs gets across the plate was Ben Smith, who only tossed for 0.2 innings.

Offensively, Mizzou couldn't match what Mississippi State was bringing at the plate, getting out-hit 13-5. Cayden Nicoletto and Jedier Hernandez were the only two Tigers to register an RBI in the loss.

Up next - Mizzou will look to avoid getting swept on the final game of the season at Taylor Stadium. MU's senior day game against Mississippi State will start at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 17.
