WASHINGTON, D.C. (KMIZ)

The St. Louis Cardinals extended their winning streak to eight games with a 6-1 win over the Washington Nationals, on Sunday afternoon. With the victory, skipper Oli Marmol and company won their fifth-straight series.

The eight-game winning streak is STL's longest since 2022.

After this hot stretch, the Red Birds are 22-19 overall through the first 41 games of the season and sit in second place in the National League Central.

Home runs from Lars Nootbaar, Wilson Contreras and Nolan Arenado put the Cardinals over the top against the Nationals. Interestingly enough, STL was on a streak of four-consecutive wins without a home run, but Nootbaar didn't wait too long to break that up. In the first inning, the St. Louis outfielder led off the game with a 382-foot dinger.

The St. Louis bats put Washington starter MacKenzie Gore and the Nationals' pitching staff through the ringer. In addition to Nootbaar's leadoff homer, the birds posted five more runs, courtesy of a 406-foot dinger from Contreras, an RBI single off the bat of Yohel Pozo, a Victor Scott II RBI single to center and Arenado's fourth home run of the season.

On the hill, Miles Mikolas handled business for the Cardinals. He pitched 5.1 innings and only allowed one earned run on four hits. He also fanned five Washington batters. With Sunday's win, he improved to 2-2 in 2025.

Up next - St. Louis will look to extend its winning streak to nine game with game one of a three-game set against Philadelphia. First pitch between the Cardinals and the Phillies is set for 5:45 p.m. on Monday, May 12.
