COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

As Mid-Missouri continues to get hit with heavy rain, experts suggest homeowners check their homes for potential water damage.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, water damage and freezing are the second most common causes of property damage for homeowners.

Cleanup and Total Restoration suggests checking homes for visible cracks or gaps in walls and around windows and doors. Gutters and sump pumps should also be inspected for clogs or damage. Leaks can be found under sinks or behind appliances. A sign of possible water damage is the smell of mildew.

Homeowners are advised to work quickly if a leak is found. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, water damage should be cleaned within 48 hours to prevent mold growth. Home Depot also warns people that black or grey water leaks are a sign of contamination that may need professional treatment.

Before cleaning up a leak, all items around it should be removed or lifted out of the water to stay dry. Water-soaked items like books or stuffed items should be thrown out. Water can then be soaked up with a mop. The room should be dried with a fan or dehumidifier.

If water damage affected walls, floors, ceilings or insulation, all swollen areas should be cut out or removed to be replaced with new materials when dried.

When a home is more heavily flooded, electricity should be turned off for safety before treating the area.
