Slick roads cause multiple crashes amid high winds and snow
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
Slick road conditions caused multiple accidents Wednesday morning after strong winds and snow swept into Mid-Missouri.
Boone County Fire posted on its social media Wednesday morning warning drivers to exercise extreme caution due to deteriorating road conditions. The Boone County Joint Communication system also sent several alerts about accidents and downed power lines and trees.
The National Weather Service reported 53 mph wind gusts at the Columbia Regional Airport on Wednesday morning. A 53-mph gust was also recorded at the Jefferson City Airport.
Between 6:51 a.m. and 8:40 a.m., there were nine reported accidents on Highway 63.
- 6:51 a.m., BCJC Urgent: One lane of S Hwy 63 southbound at E RTE H closed due to vehicle collision. Choose alternate route.
- 7:09 a.m., BCJC Urgent: Motor vehicle collision S Highway 63 Southbound at Discovery Pkwy. Use caution, avoid area if possible.
- 7:10 a.m., BCJC Urgent: Motor vehicle collision S Highway 63 Southbound at Deer Park Rd. Use caution, avoid area if possible.
- 7:13 a.m., BCJC Urgent: Motor vehicle collision N Highway 63 Northbound at the Hinton J Turn. Use caution, avoid area if possible.
- 7:22 a.m., BCJC Urgent: Motor vehicle collision S Highway 63 Northbound at E RTE H. Use caution, avoid area if possible.
- 7:24 a.m., BCJC Urgent: Motor vehicle collision S Highway 63 Northbound at E New Salem Ln. Use caution, avoid area if possible.
- 7:38 a.m., BCJC Urgent: Motor vehicle collision N Highway 63 Southbound at Highway 63 Connector Southbound.
- 8:15 a.m., BCJC Urgent: Motor vehicle collision S Highway 63 Southbound at E Martin Ln. Passing lane closed.
- 8:40 a.m, BCJC Urgent: Motor vehicle collision S Highway 63 Southbound at E Gilpin Rd. Use caution, avoid area if possible.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop F shared on X "this is leading to multiple vehicles sliding off the roadway, especially on US 63, south of Columbia."
Wednesday is expected to stay cloudy and cool, with temperatures beginning to warm on Thursday.
