NEW ORLEANS, La. (KMIZ)

The Chiefs are navigating uncharted territory at Super Bowl LIX.

Kansas City is the first two-time defending world champion to reach the Super Bowl for a third consecutive season. After completing its preparation, the franchise is ready to make a run at the first three-peat in NFL history on Sunday, Feb. 9.

The Chiefs officially became the closest team in league history to accomplish the feat by defeating the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship, but the road to New Orleans did feature some adversity. During Kansas City's 19-game schedule, 12 of its contests were decided by just one-possession.

However, the franchise showed incredible resilience in those games, posting a flawless 12-0 record. Dating back to last season, the Chiefs have won 17 straight one-score games, which is also an NFL record. The lessons they learned from those challenges have prepared them to take a shot at rewriting the history books and appreciate the effort it took to reach Super Bowl LIX.

“You think of all the ups and downs and arounds that you went through during the season, the
injuries, all those things that have to just happen the right way," head coach Andy Reid said after defeating the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship. "The margin to win or lose in this league is so small. The parity is unbelievable."

“It’s a long process. It takes everybody. It takes every single person on the team," quarterback Patrick Mahomes said. "For us to go through the season and win the games the way that we won them, I’m proud of the team, but like you said, we’re not to the ultimate goal yet and this will be a great challenge for us with Philadelphia. I’m excited for the guys preparing and get to New Orleans and put up our best shot.”

Kickoff at Super Bowl LIX from the Caesars Superdome is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. on FOX 22.
