Columbia College splits doubleheader, women’s team falls short of program record
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
After a stellar start to its season, Columbia College Women's Basketball fell just one win short of tying a program record.
First-year head coach Matt Moore's team suffered its first loss of the season 75-70 to Mission University on Saturday afternoon, ending its streak of 18 straight wins to begin the 2024-25 campaign. The program's record for most consecutive victories to start a season still stands at 19 straight wins from the 2015-2016 team.
However, head coach Tomas Brock's group extended its winning streak to four consecutive wins with an 86-74 victory in the second half of the doubleheader. With Saturday's win, Columbia College Men's Basketball improved its overall record to 16-5 and 9-2 in conference play.
Mallory Shetley gave her team a one-point lead with a successful jump shot with less than two minutes remaining in the debut game of the doubleheader. However, Mission University answered with a jumper from Heaven Shockley to regain the lead in the final minute, and Columbia College could not connect on another go-ahead bucket to keep its winning streak alive.
The Cougars had four players finish in double figures, led by 14-point performances from Shetley and Mya Miller. Ashtyn Klusmeyer (13) and Tori Rubel (12) also cracked double-digit scoring, and Rubel tallied 12 rebounds to post her second double-double of the season.
Columbia College and Mission were locked in another close game in the second half of the doubleheader. The Patriots faced just a one-point deficit at the 11:55-mark of the second half, but the Cougars recorded a 16-4 scoring run to stretch its advantage to 13 points, their largest lead of the game, to split the doubleheader.
Five different Cougars scored at least 10 points in the contest: Collin Parker (21), Harrison Vickers (15), Kai Steinman (13), Seth Larson (12) and Zhvaughn Ward (10). Parker also added a game-high 16 rebounds and three blocks on 9-for-14 shooting to clinch the 21st double-double of his college career.
