Americans are saddled with medical bills.

A study released last year says 20 million Americans might be saddled with medical debt. Medical debt is also the leading cause of bankruptcy in the United States by a mile.

This week the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau issued a rule that would keep that medical debt off of consumers' credit reports.

The rule could still be upended but supporters say it would benefit American consumers who have trouble getting loans because of medical debt.
