Palm Springs to vote on paying $27M after displacement of Black and Latino families

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Black and Latino families who were displaced from a Southern California neighborhood in the 1960s have reached a tentative settlement agreement with the city of Palm Springs. The $5.9 million deal is much smaller than the $2.3 billion former residents and descendants previously sought as restitution for their displacement. The Palm Springs City Council is set to vote on the agreement Thursday. The money would go toward direct compensation to former residents and descendants. City council will also vote on approving $20 million for housing assistance programs.
