Expected temperature drop worries road crews
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
As winter weather moves through Mid-Missouri, officials are starting to get worried about a drop in temperature that could lead to slippery roads Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
Jefferson City Public Works operations director Britt Smith said the road conditions in the capital city were clear around noon Wednesday, and his team will continue to monitor the roads throughout the day.
However, Smith said he is worried about when the sun goes down and the temperatures plummet.
Lows overnight could hit the single digits with Thursday highs not exceeding the teens.
Smith said when the temperatures drop below 20 degrees, salt loses its effectiveness. The department hopes to keep the snow and ice off the roads to prepare for the drop in temperatures.
A spokesman for the Missouri Department of Transportation Central District said his agency also has concerns about ice forming Thursday morning.
MoDOT will have crews out all day and night trying to keep up with the snow and ice, he said.
