A man charged with murder for the death of a Columbia teenager is now charged with stealing the vehicle used in the killing.

Byron Sampson, 20, of St. Louis, was charged with second-degree murder after he was accused of killing 18-year-old Traquan Reed on Oct. 10. Sampson is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7.

Sampson was charged on Thursday in St. Louis County with stealing more than $25,000, second-degree burglary, stealing a gun and stealing other property. A court date has not been set in that case and a $50,000 bond was set.

The new probable cause statement claims that Sampson broke into the Dave Sinclair Ford Dealership at 1:25 a.m. Oct. 10. He allegedly broke a glass door, pried open key boxes, a safe, doors and drawers. The statement says that he stole several key FOBs, a gun that was in the safe, electronics, $3,000 in cash and debit and credit cards.

He then allegedly took a 2021 Dodge Ram from the lot and drove it to Columbia, the statement says.

Sampson is accused of intentionally hitting Reed with the stolen truck. Reed was pronounced dead at an area hospital. Court documents in previous reporting say that police found a bag of ammunition and a gun at the crash scene.

Two Columbia men were charged in the death. Julius J. Mosby, 18, and Demetrius L. Mays, 22, were charged on Friday with first-degree robbery and second-degree felony murder.

Mays is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond. A confined docket hearing is scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 23. A preliminary hearing is set for 9 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 14

Mosby was arrested on Friday in Indianapolis, Indiana. He has yet to appear on the Boone County Jail roster, but an extradition order was filed on Tuesday.
